In this guide (7 sections)
Avery 5164 is a 3-1/3" x 4" label, six to a US Letter sheet. Avery's 5164 template page lists 16 other product numbers that share the template, so a file made for 5164 prints in the right place on any of them. The main difference between them is the printer each is made for, and in a few cases the adhesive.
Here is the list, sorted, then what sets 5164 and 8164 apart and what this size is good for.
What size is Avery 5164?
From Avery's 5164 template and product pages, checked October 27, 2026:
| Detail | Avery 5164 |
|---|---|
| Label size | 3-1/3" x 4" (84.7 x 101.6 mm, our conversion) |
| Labels per sheet | 6 |
| Layout | 2 across, 3 down (our arithmetic; the only way six fit a Letter sheet) |
| Sheet | 8-1/2" x 11" (US Letter) |
| Color on template page | White |
| Printer type | Laser, per Avery's 5164 product page |
| Uses Avery lists | Shipping and mailing, food labeling in hospitality, school ID labels, product labels, organization |
| Blank downloads | Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PDF, Apple Pages |
Why two by three? Two 4" columns take 8" of the 8-1/2" width. Three 3-1/3" rows take 10" of the 11" height. Turned the other way, only four labels would fit. So every 5164-compatible sheet uses the same grid.
Each label is about 13.3 square inches, or 86.0 cm2 (our math). That is two-thirds more room than a 2" x 4" Avery 5163 label.
Every number Avery lists as 5164-compatible
Avery's 5164 page lists these 16 numbers under "Template Compatibility." We sorted them; the list itself is Avery's.
| Group | Numbers Avery lists as using the 5164 template |
|---|---|
| Four digits | 5264, 5524, 6436, 8164, 8254, 8464, 8564 |
| Five digits | 15264, 32134, 48464, 48864, 55164, 55464, 58164, 95905, 95940 |
Avery's 8164 template page lists the same family, with 5164 in place of 8164. Any of these numbers can be looked up in our template cross-reference, which links to the Avery 5164 template page and its to-scale sheet drawing.
Two of the numbers are worth knowing about. Avery's own titles describe 55164 and 58164 as repositionable shipping labels, so they are made to peel off and move. If you need a label that stays put on a carton, check the adhesive on the package before you buy a compatible number.
Avery 5164 vs 8164
Same template, different printer.
| Avery 5164 | Avery 8164 | |
|---|---|---|
| Label size | 3-1/3" x 4" | 3-1/3" x 4" |
| Per sheet | 6 | 6 |
| Template | 5164 | 8164 (Avery lists 5164 as compatible) |
| Printer type on Avery's product page | Laser | Inkjet |
| Pack shown on product page | 600 labels | 150 labels |
| Material | Matte white paper, permanent adhesive | Matte white paper, permanent adhesive |
| Features Avery names | Sure Feed, TrueBlock | Sure Feed, TrueBlock |
Avery's TrueBlock feature, as its product pages describe it, covers whatever is underneath the label. That matters if you reuse boxes and want to hide an old address or barcode.
Why you shouldn't swap laser and inkjet sheets
Avery's help article on laser and inkjet products recommends using laser labels in laser printers and inkjet labels in inkjet printers. Its reasons:
- A laser printer's heat can weaken an inkjet label's adhesive. Labels can lift off the backing and jam the printer.
- The same heat can change the label's color.
- Inkjet ink is wet, and laser label stock is not made to hold it, so prints can smear.
Avery says laser packs have a pink "Laser" bar and inkjet packs a blue "Inkjet" bar. Products for both have both bars.
What is the 5164 size good for?
Avery's page lists five uses: shipping and mailing, food labeling in hospitality, school ID, product labels and organization. In practice, the size sits between the small address labels and a full shipping label.
| Job | Does 5164 fit? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Typed "ship to" address on a box | Yes | Plenty of room for a large, readable address. |
| 4" x 6" carrier label from USPS, UPS or FedEx | No, not at full size | 3-1/3" is shorter than 6"; shrinking a label can hurt barcode scanning. |
| Product label on a jar side or box panel | Often | Measure the surface first. |
| Bilingual food label in Canada | Often | Room for English and French text side by side. |
| Bin and shelf labels | Yes | Six per sheet, little waste. |
For a full-size 4" x 6" carrier label, use the half-sheet Avery 5126 or the full-sheet Avery 5165. Our Avery shipping label sizes guide compares all five sheet shipping templates.
Using 5164 for food labels in Canada
Because Avery lists food labeling among its uses, 5164 shows up a lot on jars and boxes at markets. If you sell food in Canada, the label size feeds into one of CFIA's rules: the minimum height of the net quantity numbers depends on the area of the principal display surface.
If the display surface is the same size as a 5164 label (86.0 cm2, our math), it falls in CFIA's band for a 3.2 mm minimum numeral height. Our net quantity font size guide explains the bands, and the net quantity height tool works it out for your package. Remember that CFIA measures the package's display surface, which is not always the label. For everything else that goes on the label, see the Canada food label checklist.
How to print 5164 labels so they line up
Avery's printer settings page gives the same advice for all its sheets:
- Page size 8.5" x 11".
- Scale at 100% or "Actual Size," not "Fit to page."
- Paper or media type set to Labels, Heavyweight, Matte Photo or Cardstock.
- Fan the sheets and use the manual or straightest feed tray, filled no more than three-quarters.
- For a short run, put about 20 sheets of plain paper under the label sheets.
Print a test page on plain paper and hold it behind a label sheet against a window. A steady offset is a printer setting; drift that grows down the page is scaling. Our guide to Avery labels not lining up covers both.
Is there a 5164 template for Google Docs?
Avery's 5164 template page does not list one. It offers Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PDF and Apple Pages files, plus Design and Print Online, and its FAQ says you can upload a finished design from Canva into the online tool.
If you build your own layout elsewhere, you know the label size (3-1/3" x 4"), the count (6) and the grid (two by three). Avery has not published margins and gaps for 5164 on the pages we checked, so we don't give them. Starting from Avery's own file keeps Avery's spacing.
What to check before you act
- Confirm your number is in Avery's list above, or that the package says 3-1/3" x 4", 6 per sheet, US Letter.
- Match the pink "Laser" or blue "Inkjet" bar on the package to your printer.
- Check the adhesive if you buy 55164 or 58164; Avery describes them as repositionable.
- Print at 100% on plain paper first.
- For food in Canada, measure the package's display surface, not just the label.
