In this guide (7 sections)
Avery 5163 is a 2" x 4" label, 10 to a US Letter sheet. Avery's 5163 template page lists 30 other product numbers that use exactly the same template, from 5137 to 95945. If your box shows any of those numbers, the 5163 file will line up with your sheet.
Below is that list, sorted so you can find your number, then the one difference that matters most between 5163 and 8163: the printer each is made for.
What size is Avery 5163?
These details come from Avery's 5163 template and product pages, checked October 27, 2026.
| Detail | Avery 5163 |
|---|---|
| Label size | 2" x 4" (50.8 x 101.6 mm, our conversion) |
| Labels per sheet | 10 |
| Layout | 2 across, 5 down (our arithmetic; it is the only way ten 2" x 4" labels fit a Letter sheet) |
| Sheet | 8-1/2" x 11" (US Letter) |
| Color on template page | White |
| Printer type | Laser, per Avery's 5163 product page |
| Uses Avery lists | Shipping and mailing, product labels, ID labels, organization |
| Blank downloads | Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PDF, Apple Pages |
Three columns of 4" labels would need 12" of width, so the sheet can only hold two columns. Five rows of 2" labels take 10" of the 11" height. That is why every 5163-compatible sheet has the same two-by-five grid.
Every number Avery lists as 5163-compatible
Avery's 5163 page lists these 30 numbers under "Template Compatibility." We sorted them numerically and grouped them by length. The list is Avery's; the grouping is ours.
| Group | Numbers Avery lists as using the 5163 template |
|---|---|
| Four digits | 5137, 5263, 5523, 5613, 5963, 6427, 6527, 6528, 8163, 8253, 8363, 8463, 8923 |
| Five digits, 1xxxx | 15513, 15702, 16791, 18163, 18863 |
| Five digits, 4xxxx | 48163, 48263, 48363, 48807, 48863 |
| Five digits, 5xxxx and up | 55163, 55463, 58163, 85563, 95523, 95910, 95945 |
Avery's 8163 template page shows the same list from the other side: it names 5163 as compatible, along with the other 29.
You can look up any of these numbers in our template cross-reference, which sends you to the Avery 5163 template page with its to-scale drawing.
Numbers on Avery's help page but not the template page
Avery also has a help article for 2" x 4" labels. It says several Avery labels are 10 per sheet at 2" x 4", and that the numbers differ by pack size, color, material, adhesive or printer type while sharing one template.
Its "Applies to" list includes some numbers that the 5163 template page does not, such as 5663, 15163 and 38363. It also leaves out some that the template page includes, such as 5137 and 95910. If your number appears on only one of the two lists, the size and count on your package are the final check: 2" x 4", 10 per sheet, US Letter.
Avery 5163 vs 8163: what is the difference?
The template is the same. The printer is not.
| Avery 5163 | Avery 8163 | |
|---|---|---|
| Label size | 2" x 4" | 2" x 4" |
| Per sheet | 10 | 10 |
| Template | 5163 | 8163 (Avery lists 5163 as compatible) |
| Printer type on Avery's product page | Laser | Inkjet |
| Pack shown on product page | 1,000 labels | 250 labels |
| Material | Matte white paper, permanent adhesive | Matte white paper, permanent adhesive |
| Features Avery names | Sure Feed, TrueBlock | Sure Feed, TrueBlock |
So a design made in the 5163 template prints in the right place on 8163 sheets, and the other way round. What changes is the face stock, which Avery makes for either laser toner or inkjet ink.
Don't read too much into the first digit. Avery's 5613 product page, for example, lists 5613 as an inkjet label: two packs of 8163. Pack sizes, colors and printer types vary across the 30 numbers, which is why Avery tells you to check the specific product number.
Why the printer type matters
Avery's help page on laser and inkjet products gives these reasons not to mix them:
- Laser printers use heat. On an inkjet label, that heat can weaken the adhesive, so labels lift off the backing and can jam the printer.
- Heat can also change the color of an inkjet label.
- Inkjet printers lay down wet ink. Laser labels are not made to hold it, so the print can smear.
Avery says its laser packages carry a pink "Laser" bar and inkjet packages a blue "Inkjet" bar. Products that work in both carry both bars. If you are unsure which printer you have, Avery's tip is to look at the cartridges: long toner cylinders mean laser, ink cartridges mean inkjet.
How to print on 5163 labels without drift
Most misprints on 2" x 4" sheets come from scaling, not the template. Avery's printer settings page recommends:
- Set the page size to 8.5" x 11".
- Set scaling to 100% or "Actual Size." If you print a PDF and can't see the option, use the system print dialog.
- Set the paper or media type to Labels, Heavyweight, Matte Photo or Cardstock.
- Fan the sheets, use the manual or straightest feed tray, and fill the tray only half to three-quarters full.
- If you print a few sheets, put about 20 sheets of plain paper under them.
Print one page on plain paper first and hold it against a label sheet up to a window. If it is off by the same amount on every label, it is a printer offset. If it gets worse down the page, it is scaling. Our guide to Avery labels not lining up walks through both fixes.
Is there a 5163 template for Google Docs?
Not from Avery's template page. It lists blank downloads for Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PDF and Apple Pages, and links to Avery Design and Print Online.
If you work in another program, the measurements you need are the label size (2" x 4"), the count (10) and the grid (two across, five down). Avery has not published margins and gaps for 5163 on the pages we checked, so we don't list them here. Starting from Avery's own Word or PDF file is the safer route, because it carries Avery's spacing.
Can a 4" x 6" shipping label go on 5163?
No, not at full size. Avery's 5163 page says you can upload a PDF or image into the template, but a 2" x 4" label is half the height and two-thirds the width of a 4" x 6" carrier label. Shrinking it that much can make the barcode hard to scan.
For full-size carrier labels on a sheet printer, the half-sheet Avery 5126 and full-sheet Avery 5165 are the sizes that fit. Our Avery shipping label sizes guide compares all five sheet shipping templates side by side.
5163 still works well on parcels for:
- Return addresses on boxes, larger than the usual 1" x 2-5/8" address label.
- Packing notes, "fragile" or handling labels.
- Product, bin and ID labels where a small address label is too cramped.
If you need a bit more room per label but still several to a sheet, the next size up is Avery 5164 at 3-1/3" x 4", six to a sheet.
What to check before you act
- Find your product number in the list above, or confirm the package says 2" x 4", 10 per sheet, US Letter.
- Read the package for the pink "Laser" or blue "Inkjet" bar, and match it to your printer.
- Download the template from Avery's own 5163 page, not a copy from elsewhere.
- Print at 100% (Actual Size) on plain paper first and check alignment against a sheet.
- Use 5126 or 5165 for a full-size 4" x 6" carrier label.
Questions people ask
Is Avery 8163 the same as 5163?
They share a size (2 by 4 inches), a 10-per-sheet layout and a template, so one file prints on both. Avery's product pages list 5163 for laser printers and 8163 for inkjet printers.
Can I use the 5163 template for Avery 18163 or 58163?
Yes. Both numbers are on Avery's list of products compatible with the 5163 template. Read the package for printer type and material before you print.
How many labels are on an Avery 5163 sheet?
Ten. Each label is 2 by 4 inches on an 8-1/2 by 11 inch sheet, which only fits as two columns of five.
Is there an Avery 5163 template for Google Docs?
Avery's 5163 template page does not list a Google Docs download. It offers Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PDF and Apple Pages files, plus its Design and Print Online tool.
Can I put a 4x6 shipping label on Avery 5163?
Not at full size. A 5163 label is 2 by 4 inches, so a 4 by 6 inch carrier label would have to be shrunk a lot, which can stop the barcode scanning.
Can I print inkjet labels like 8163 in a laser printer?
Avery advises against it. Its help page says laser heat can weaken inkjet label adhesive and cause jams, and inkjet ink can smear on laser labels.
