Return address label sizes: Avery 5167, 5195 and 5160 compared

Avery return address label sizes compared: 5167 (80 per sheet), 5195 (60) and 5160 (30), with how many text lines fit and the compatible numbers for each.

Short answer

  • Avery 5167 is the smallest return address label at 1/2" x 1-3/4", 80 per sheet.
  • Avery 5195 is 2/3" x 1-3/4", 60 per sheet, and gives room for one more line of text than 5167.
  • Avery 5160 is 1" x 2-5/8", 30 per sheet, and fits a full address with a logo or larger type.
  • Avery doesn't say how many lines fit; by our math, 5167 fits about three short lines of small type, 5195 four and 5160 five.

Avery's two dedicated return address templates are 5167 (1/2" x 1-3/4", 80 per sheet) and 5195 (2/3" x 1-3/4", 60 per sheet). If your return address runs to four lines, or you want slightly larger type, 5195 is the safer pick. If you also want a logo or a phone number, step up to the 5160 address label (1" x 2-5/8", 30 per sheet).

All sizes and compatible numbers below come from Avery's template pages, checked October 23, 2026.

Avery return address label sizes compared

Template Size Per sheet Height in points (our math) Avery's use
5167 1/2" x 1-3/4" 80 36 pt Return address (also ID and organizing)
5195 2/3" x 1-3/4" 60 48 pt Return address
5160 1" x 2-5/8" 30 72 pt Address
5162 1-1/3" x 4" 14 96 pt Address and ID
5366 2/3" x 3-7/16" 30 48 pt File folder

All five are on US Letter sheets. Avery offers free blank downloads for each in Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, PDF and Apple Pages. The 5167, 5195, 5160 and 5162 pages also offer InDesign.

The points column is our conversion. Type sizes are measured in points, and 1 inch equals 72 points. That makes it easy to see how many lines can fit, which Avery's template pages don't tell you.

How many lines of text fit on each label?

Avery doesn't publish a line count, so here is our arithmetic. Lines of type need some extra space between them. A common default in word processors is about 1.2 times the type size. Templates also need a small inner margin, so the text doesn't touch the cut edge.

Template Height Type size Space per line (about 1.2x) Lines that fit, before margins Realistic lines
5167 36 pt 7 pt 8.4 pt 4 3
5167 36 pt 8 pt 9.6 pt 3 3, tight
5195 48 pt 8 pt 9.6 pt 5 4
5195 48 pt 9 pt 10.8 pt 4 3 to 4
5160 72 pt 10 pt 12 pt 6 5
5160 72 pt 11 pt 13.2 pt 5 4

Treat this as a planning guide, not a promise. Fonts differ in how tall they look at the same point size. Print a test page before you print 80 labels.

Width matters too. 5167 and 5195 are both 1-3/4" wide (126 points). A long street name in 8-point type can run out of room. If your longest line is a long street address with a unit number, try it on a test page first or step up to 5160.

Worked example: picking a label for a typical US return address

Here's a four-line return address:

  • Jane Example
  • 1234 Long Meadow Road, Apt 5
  • Springfield, IL 62701
  • USA
  1. Count lines. Four lines rules out 5167 unless you use very small type. Three lines would fit (drop "USA" for domestic mail).
  2. Check the longest line. "1234 Long Meadow Road, Apt 5" is 28 characters. At 8 points, that is close to the full 1-3/4" width in many fonts. Abbreviating "Road" to "Rd" buys room.
  3. Choose. 5195 at 8 points fits four lines. If you want 10-point type for readability, 5160 is the better choice.
  4. Count sheets. 200 envelopes on 5195 need four sheets (60 per sheet, 240 labels). On 5167, three sheets give you 240 labels. On 5160, seven sheets give you 210.

So the trade-off is simple: smaller labels give you more per sheet, larger labels give you more room for text.

Compatible numbers for each return label

If your box shows one of these numbers, use the template in the first column. Avery calls these compatible: same layout, but not necessarily the same material or printer type. We sorted Avery's lists.

Template Compatible numbers listed by Avery
5167 5139, 5267, 5667, 5967, 8167, 8667, 8867, 8927, 15667, 18167, 18667, 22892, 48267, 48467, 48867, 64507, 95667; Presta 36445 to 36449, 36504 to 36508, 36544 to 36548, 94203
5195 5155, 6430, 6520, 6523, 6524, 8195, 15695, 18195, 18294, 18695, 48806, 88695; Presta 97177
5162 5262, 5522, 5962, 6445, 6455, 8162, 8462, 18262, 48462, 95522; Presta 94206

The 5160 list has 48 numbers, so it has its own page: Avery 5160 equivalents.

5167 vs 5195: which return address label should you choose?

Both are 1-3/4" wide. The difference is height: 5195 is 2/3" tall, 5167 is 1/2" tall. That extra 1/6" is 12 points, enough for about one more line of small type.

Pick 5167 if:

  • Your return address fits on three lines.
  • You print a lot and want 80 labels per sheet.
  • You are happy with small type, around 7 to 8 points.

Pick 5195 if:

  • You need four lines.
  • You want a slightly larger type size.
  • You want room for a small icon or a line of space around the text.

When to use 5160 or 5162 instead

5160 and 5162 are address labels, not return labels, but they work well when the return label also carries branding.

  • 5160 (1" x 2-5/8"): room for a small logo on the left and four lines of text on the right. Thirty per sheet.
  • 5162 (1-1/3" x 4"): Avery says these slim labels suit file folders, binders and small packaging. At 4" wide, they fit a business name in larger type with the address under it. Fourteen per sheet.

If you are labeling parcels rather than envelopes, see our Avery shipping label sizes guide.

What about Avery 5366 file folder labels?

People sometimes search for 5366 alongside return labels because it shows up in the same office aisle. Avery's 5366 page lists it as a file folder label: 2/3" x 3-7/16", 30 per sheet. It is the same height as 5195 but nearly twice as wide.

That shape suits one or two long lines, like a folder name. It works for a one-line return address ("J. Example, 1234 Long Meadow Rd, Springfield IL 62701") but not a stacked four-line one. Avery's page also notes that the 5366 template is for the blank white labels, not the color-coded 5266 version.

Tips for printing small labels cleanly

Small labels show alignment errors more than big ones. A 1/16" shift barely shows on a shipping label, but it can clip a line on a 1/2" return label. Avery's help pages suggest:

  • Set scale to 100% or Actual Size.
  • Set paper size to 8.5" x 11" for US products.
  • Choose a label, heavyweight or cardstock paper type in the printer settings.
  • Print a test page on plain paper and hold it against the label sheet.

Our guide to labels that don't line up covers the full list, including browser-specific fixes.

What to check before you act

  • Count your longest line of text and the number of lines before picking a size.
  • Confirm the number on your box is on the compatible list for the template you download.
  • Check the package for laser or inkjet and match it to your printer.
  • Print a plain-paper test at 100% scale before printing a full sheet.
  • For more than one sender, consider a larger label rather than shrinking the type.

Questions people ask

What size is an Avery return address label?

Avery's main return address template, 5167, is 1/2 by 1-3/4 inches with 80 labels per sheet. Avery 5195 is a slightly taller return address label at 2/3 by 1-3/4 inches, 60 per sheet.

How many lines fit on an Avery 5167 label?

Avery's template page does not say. The label is half an inch tall, which is 36 points, so three short lines of 7 to 8 point type is a realistic limit.

What is the difference between Avery 5167 and 5195?

Both are 1-3/4 inches wide. 5167 is 1/2 inch tall with 80 per sheet, and 5195 is 2/3 inch tall with 60 per sheet, so 5195 has about a third more height for text.

Is Avery 8167 the same as 5167?

8167 appears on Avery's list of numbers compatible with the 5167 template, so the layout is the same. Check the package for the printer type and material.

Can I use file folder labels for return addresses?

You can, but Avery 5366 is long and thin at 2/3 by 3-7/16 inches, which suits one or two lines. For a full return address, 5195 or 5160 is a better shape.
