Avery shipping label sizes: 5163, 5164, 5168, 5126 and 5165

Avery's five main shipping label templates by size and labels per sheet, which ones fit a 4 x 6 inch carrier label, and the compatible numbers for each.

Short answer

  • Avery's sheet shipping labels run from 5163 (2" x 4", 10 per sheet) to 5165 (one full 8-1/2" x 11" label).
  • 5164 is 3-1/3" x 4" (6 per sheet), 5168 is 3-1/2" x 5" (4), and half-sheet 5126 is 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" (2).
  • Only 5126 and 5165 are large enough to hold a 4" x 6" carrier label without shrinking it.
  • UPS.com supports thermal printers that print 4" x 6" labels; USPS Click-N-Ship has a two-labels-per-page option on 8-1/2" x 11" stock.

Avery's five main sheet shipping templates are 5163 (2" x 4", 10 per sheet), 5164 (3-1/3" x 4", 6), 5168 (3-1/2" x 5", 4), 5126 (5-1/2" x 8-1/2", 2) and 5165 (8-1/2" x 11", 1). If you are printing a carrier label that comes out at 4" x 6", only 5126 and 5165 are big enough to take it at full size. The smaller three suit return addresses, packing info and product labels on boxes.

All sizes below come from Avery's template pages, checked October 23, 2026.

Avery shipping label sizes at a glance

Template Label size Per sheet Area per label (our math) Holds a 4" x 6" label?
5163 2" x 4" 10 8 sq in No
5164 3-1/3" x 4" 6 about 13.3 sq in No
5168 3-1/2" x 5" 4 17.5 sq in No
5126 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" 2 46.75 sq in Yes, with margin to spare
5165 8-1/2" x 11" 1 93.5 sq in Yes

Every sheet in this table is US Letter (8-1/2" x 11"). Avery offers blank downloads for each in Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, PDF and Apple Pages. Most of the pages also list InDesign; the 5126 and 5165 pages don't.

Compatible numbers for each shipping template

Avery lists other product numbers that share each template. If your box shows one of these, use the template in the first column. We sorted Avery's lists numerically.

"Compatible" here means the same template layout. It does not mean the same paper, finish or adhesive. Check the package for laser or inkjet before you print. Our 5160 equivalents guide explains the difference using the 5160 and 8160 pair, where Avery spells out that one is for laser and one for inkjet.

Which Avery label fits a 4x6 shipping label?

4" x 6" is a common thermal label size in carrier tools. UPS says ups.com supports most thermal label printers that print 4" x 6" labels, and its WorldShip software supports 4" x 6" and 4" x 8" thermal labels.

If you don't have a thermal printer, you print on Letter-size sheets instead. Here is how a 4" x 6" label fits each Avery size:

  • 5163 (2" x 4"): far too small. Half the height you need.
  • 5164 (3-1/3" x 4"): too small in both directions.
  • 5168 (3-1/2" x 5"): still short by half an inch on the width and an inch on the length.
  • 5126 (5-1/2" x 8-1/2"): fits, with about 3/4" spare on each side and over an inch top and bottom.
  • 5165 (8-1/2" x 11"): fits, with plenty of room. You can also trim it.

Shrinking a 4" x 6" label to fit 5168 is possible in some software, but barcodes need to scan cleanly. We have not found carrier guidance that approves scaled-down labels, so we wouldn't count on it.

What label stock do the carriers list?

Here is what the carriers' own help pages say, as checked October 23, 2026. Carrier tools change, so check again before buying a large stock of labels.

Carrier tool Thermal sizes listed Sheet (laser or inkjet) options listed
UPS.com and CampusShip 4" x 6" Standard desktop laser and inkjet printers supported; no sizes given on that page
UPS WorldShip 4 x 6 or 4 x 6-1/4; 4 x 8 or 4 x 8-1/4; 4 x 11 8-1/2 x 11 with 1, 2 or 4 labels per page; A4
USPS Click-N-Ship Not mentioned in the FAQ we checked Two 4" x 6-1/2" labels on one 8-1/2" x 11" self-adhesive sheet (no customs form)

The UPS WorldShip stock list names laser labels at two per 8-1/2" x 11" page, the same layout as a half-sheet like 5126. USPS's two-per-page option prints two 4" x 6-1/2" labels on one Letter sheet. Each of those labels is smaller than a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" half sheet, so the size works. Whether each label lands neatly inside each half depends on where the software places it. Print one copy on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet first.

USPS also says to use a laser printer or a high-quality inkjet printer, and recommends 600 DPI for inkjet.

We haven't yet verified FedEx, Canada Post, Amazon, Etsy, eBay or Shopify label sizes. We will add them after checking each one's own help pages.

Worked example: half-sheet labels for a small online shop

Say you ship 20 parcels a week from a home inkjet printer and don't want a thermal printer yet.

  1. Pick the template. Your shipping software creates a 4" x 6" label. From the table above, 5126 is the smallest Avery size that holds it at full size.
  2. Count sheets. Two labels per sheet means 10 sheets a week for 20 parcels.
  3. Set the print size. Print at 100% or Actual Size. Avery's printer settings page says to set scale to 100% and paper to 8.5" x 11" for most US products.
  4. Test the position. Print one label on plain paper. Hold it against a 5126 sheet up to a window. If the label sits inside the top half, you are set.
  5. Plan for the second half. If your software prints one label per page, the bottom label is left over. Check whether your software has a two-per-page option, like USPS Click-N-Ship does, so both halves get used in one pass.

If the label prints too small, too low or off-center, see our fix for labels that don't line up.

What are the smaller shipping labels for?

The three smaller templates still earn their "shipping" tag. Avery's pages list these uses:

  • 5163 (2" x 4"): shipping and mailing, plus product and ID labels. Ten per sheet is handy for return addresses on boxes or "fragile" stickers.
  • 5164 (3-1/3" x 4"): shipping and mailing, food labeling in hospitality, school ID labels and product labels.
  • 5168 (3-1/2" x 5"): Avery lists it as a shipping label. Four per sheet suits large address labels for envelopes and flat mailers that you fill in yourself.

For labels smaller than 5163, see our return address label sizes guide. For square and round product stickers, see square and round product labels.

Full-sheet 5165: when one big label makes sense

5165 is a single label covering the whole Letter sheet. It is the most flexible option: print any layout, then cut it to size. That suits:

  • A 4" x 6" carrier label plus a packing note on the same sheet.
  • Odd-sized labels for boxes and bins.
  • Low volumes, where buying several label sizes isn't worth it.

The trade-off is cutting time and waste. If you always print one 4" x 6" label, a half-sheet template uses less label stock per parcel.

What to check before you act

  • Find out what size label your shipping software produces before you buy labels.
  • Match the label stock to your printer (laser or inkjet) by reading the package.
  • Confirm your product number appears in Avery's compatible list for the template you download.
  • Print at 100% scale on Letter paper, and test on plain paper first.
  • Check the carrier's current help page; label options can change.

Questions people ask

Which Avery label is a half-sheet shipping label?

Avery 5126 is the half-sheet template: two labels per sheet, each 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches. Avery lists 8126, 5526, 5912, 18126 and 48126 among its compatible numbers.

Can I print a 4x6 shipping label on Avery 5168?

Not at full size. 5168 labels are 3-1/2 by 5 inches, which is smaller than 4 by 6 in both directions. A 4 by 6 label would have to be scaled down, which can affect barcode scanning.

What size is Avery 5164?

Avery 5164 labels are 3-1/3 by 4 inches, six per sheet. Avery lists uses including shipping and mailing, product labels and food labeling in hospitality.

What label sizes does USPS Click-N-Ship print?

The USPS FAQ describes a two-per-page option that prints two 4 by 6-1/2 inch domestic labels on one 8-1/2 by 11 inch self-adhesive sheet, for labels without a customs form.

Do carriers accept labels printed on plain paper?

UPS says ups.com and WorldShip support standard desktop laser and inkjet printers. USPS says to use white paper or self-adhesive labels with a laser or high-quality inkjet printer.
