Square and round label templates for jars and products

Avery square and round product label templates, from 3/4 inch squares to 2-1/2 inch circles, with label areas and the CFIA minimum text heights for each.

Short answer

  • Avery's 2" round template is 22807 (12 per sheet, glossy white); its 2" square is 22806 (12 per sheet).
  • Smaller options are 22805 (1-1/2" square, 24 per sheet) and Presta 94102 (3/4" square, 80 per sheet); 5294 is a 2-1/2" round neon label.
  • A 2" round label has about 20.3 sq cm of area and a 2-1/2" round about 31.7 sq cm, by our math.
  • In Canada, CFIA sets minimum heights: 1.6 mm for the common name and for net quantity numerals on surfaces up to 32 sq cm.

For a 2" round jar or lid label, Avery's template is 22807 (12 per sheet). For a 2" square, it's 22806 (12 per sheet). Smaller products can use 22805 (1-1/2" square, 24 per sheet) or Presta 94102 (3/4" square, 80 per sheet). For a larger, louder circle there is 5294, a 2-1/2" neon round with 12 per sheet.

If you sell food in Canada, size is only half the question. CFIA sets minimum text heights, so check that your required text still fits at a legal size.

Square and round label sizes at a glance

Sizes and sheet counts come from Avery's template pages, checked October 23, 2026. Areas are our arithmetic.

Template Shape and size Per sheet Finish on template page Area (sq in) Area (sq cm)
Presta 94102 3/4" square 80 Not stated 0.56 3.6
22805 1-1/2" square 24 White, print-to-the-edge 2.25 14.5
22807 2" round 12 Glossy white, print-to-the-edge 3.14 20.3
22806 2" square 12 White, print-to-the-edge 4.00 25.8
5294 2-1/2" round 12 Neon 4.91 31.7

All of these offer blank downloads in Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, PDF and Apple Pages. The 22805 and 22806 pages also list InDesign.

Notice that a 2" square has about 27% more area than a 2" round. If your text is tight on a circle, a square of the same width gives you the corners back.

Compatible numbers

If your package shows one of these numbers, use the template in the first column. We sorted Avery's lists.

Template Compatible numbers listed by Avery
22807 5657, 5907, 22205, 22612, 22817, 22825, 22877, 22921, 22923, 22933, 22961, 40105, 41464, 41494, 64502, 80510, 92807; Presta 36495 to 36498, 94501, 97217
22806 5908, 22565, 22816, 22853, 22921, 22960, 64503, 64510, 80510; Presta 36475 to 36479, 94107, 97198
5294 45294
22805 None shown on the page we checked
Presta 94102 None shown on the page we checked

Two numbers, 22921 and 80510, appear on both the 22806 and 22807 lists. Avery's pages don't explain why. They may be multi-shape or sample packs, but we couldn't confirm that, so check the package before you choose a template for those two.

How much text fits on a 2 inch round label?

A circle loses space at the edges. The widest line runs through the middle, and lines get shorter toward the top and bottom. On a 2" circle:

  • The middle line can be close to 2" wide, minus a safety margin.
  • A line halfway between the center and the edge (1/2" from center) can be about 1.7" wide.
  • A line 3/4" from the center can be only about 1.3" wide.

Those widths are geometry (a chord across a circle), not Avery figures. They show why round labels work best with a short name in the middle and small details in a curve or a band.

A quick way to plan: draw your layout inside a square that fits in the circle. On a 2" circle, that inner square is about 1.4" on each side. Text that fits there will clear the curved edge.

Canadian food labels: minimum text heights by label size

If you sell prepackaged food in Canada, CFIA's labelling rules set minimum heights for some text. Here are the two that matter most on small labels, from CFIA pages checked October 23, 2026:

  • Common name (what the food is, like "strawberry jam"): letters at least 1.6 mm tall. If the principal display surface is 10 sq cm or less, the minimum is 0.8 mm. (CFIA food labelling checklist, modified January 15, 2025.)
  • Net quantity numerals (like "250 mL"): bold, with a minimum height set by the principal display surface area. (CFIA net quantity page, modified February 13, 2026.)
Principal display surface Minimum net quantity numeral height
Up to 32 sq cm (5 sq in) 1.6 mm (1/16")
Over 32 to 258 sq cm (5 to 40 sq in) 3.2 mm (1/8")
Over 258 to 645 sq cm (40 to 100 sq in) 6.4 mm (1/4")
Over 645 to 2,580 sq cm (100 to 400 sq in) 9.5 mm (3/8")
Over 2,580 sq cm (400 sq in) 12.7 mm (1/2")

Here's how those rules line up with the label sizes above, if your label area were the principal display surface:

Template Area Common name minimum Net quantity minimum
Presta 94102 (3/4" sq) 3.6 sq cm 0.8 mm 1.6 mm
22805 (1-1/2" sq) 14.5 sq cm 1.6 mm 1.6 mm
22807 (2" round) 20.3 sq cm 1.6 mm 1.6 mm
22806 (2" sq) 25.8 sq cm 1.6 mm 1.6 mm
5294 (2-1/2" round) 31.7 sq cm 1.6 mm 1.6 mm
5164 (3-1/3" x 4") 86.0 sq cm 1.6 mm 3.2 mm

An important caveat: CFIA ties these minimums to the principal display surface of the package, which is a defined term. It is not automatically the same as your label's area. A 2" lid label on a jar with a large side may be measured differently. Read CFIA's definition for your container, or ask CFIA, before you rely on this table.

Also note that 5294, at 31.7 sq cm, sits just under the 32 sq cm line. If the surface CFIA counts is even slightly larger than the label, the net quantity minimum doubles to 3.2 mm.

These heights are minimums for letters and numerals as printed, not font sizes. The safest check is to print a test label and measure the letters with a ruler marked in millimeters.

Our Canadian guides go further: the food label checklist, net quantity font sizes, best before date format and farmers' market labels. This is general information, not legal advice.

Worked example: a 250 mL jam jar sold in Canada

Say you make strawberry jam in 250 mL jars and want one label on the lid.

  1. Pick a size. The lid fits a 2" round label, so 22807 is the template.
  2. List the required text. CFIA's checklist includes the common name, net quantity, ingredients and allergens, name and principal place of business, date markings and, unless exempt, a Nutrition Facts table, all bilingual where required. That's far too much for a 2" lid.
  3. Split the job. Put the common name and net quantity on the lid, and the rest on a second, larger label on the side. CFIA's checklist also says the ingredient list should not be on the bottom of the package unless an exception applies.
  4. Check heights. If the lid were treated as the principal display surface (20.3 sq cm), the common name needs letters at least 1.6 mm tall, and "250 mL" needs bold numerals at least 1.6 mm tall.
  5. Consider a side label. A 5164 label (3-1/3" x 4", 6 per sheet) gives far more room for bilingual text, if your jar side is wide enough. Avery lists food labeling and product labels among its uses.

Whether the lid or the side counts as the principal display panel depends on the package. When in doubt, check with CFIA.

Printing tips for edge-to-edge labels

Avery calls 22805, 22806 and 22807 print-to-the-edge labels, but its template pages don't explain the setup. Its Chrome and Chromebook help page has one tip: for print-to-the-edge products, extend the image out to the second dotted line in Design & Print. That gives a little bleed, so a small shift doesn't leave a white rim.

For general alignment problems, see our guide to labels that don't line up. For other label sizes, see Avery shipping label sizes.

What to check before you act

  • Measure the flat area on your jar or package before choosing a label.
  • Confirm your package number is on the template's compatible list.
  • List every item your product label legally needs before you pick the smallest size.
  • In Canada, confirm what CFIA counts as your principal display surface.
  • Print a test and measure the common name and net quantity heights in millimeters.

Questions people ask

What Avery template is a 2 inch round label?

Avery 22807 is a 2-inch round, glossy white, print-to-the-edge label with 12 per sheet. Avery lists compatible numbers including 22817, 22825, 5657 and 41494.

What Avery template is a 2 inch square label?

Avery 22806 is a 2 by 2 inch print-to-the-edge square label with 12 per sheet. Compatible numbers on Avery's page include 22565, 22816, 5908 and 64503.

What size label do I need for a jam jar?

It depends on the jar and on how much text you must fit. Measure the flat area of the lid or side, then compare it with the label sizes here and with the text you need to print.

How tall must the text be on a Canadian food label?

CFIA says the common name must be at least 1.6 mm tall, or 0.8 mm if the principal display surface is 10 square cm or less. Net quantity numerals must be bold and at least 1.6 mm on surfaces up to 32 square cm.

What does print-to-the-edge mean on Avery labels?

Avery names 22805, 22806 and 22807 print-to-the-edge labels, meaning the design can run to the label's edge. Its template pages give no further detail, so check the package for setup tips.
